Biarritz, with its rugged cliffs and golden sandy beaches, has long been a magnet for those seeking the ultimate romantic escape. The city's elegant architecture, dating back to the Belle Époque, exudes an old-world charm that transports visitors to a bygone era. As the sun sets over the Bay of Biscay, the waves gently kiss the shore, providing a backdrop for lovers to stroll hand in hand along the promenade, sharing whispers of affection.
But Biarritz is not only a lover's paradise; it's also a surfer's dream. This coastal gem is renowned for its world-class waves and has earned its reputation as the European capital of surfing. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the city boasts consistent swells and a vibrant surf culture that permeates every aspect of life.
Surfers from all corners of the globe pilgrimage to Biarritz to ride the waves that roll in with unrivaled consistency. The thrill-seekers take to the water, where the marriage of sea and board creates a connection like no other. As the sun rises, surfers paddle out to greet the day, their boards cutting through the shimmering waters, seeking the perfect wave. The adrenaline rush, the dance with the ocean, and the exhilaration of riding a cresting wave make Biarritz an alluring destination for wave riders.
As my first time photographing in France, Biarritz was a long-held dream. Perhaps because of the classic French glamour or simply because I admire and love places that are destinations for motorhomes and nomads, surfers or not.
It was a great pleasure to photograph the region. Everything seems to fit into a romantic plot: the sea, rocks, cliffs, cafés, restaurants and even local characters.
I was able to do a bodysurfing session on the day I arrived, with waves of 1.5 meters, cold water as usual and a post-surf wind that stung my spine since I underestimated the cold and wore only a vest.
The eternal doubt about which aspect to give the photos helped me to prove and enjoy the trip even more and all the files that to this day, almost a year later, still make me stop and enjoy editing an image.
